A 14-year-old youth was discovered deceased only a few days after being falsely accused of stealing the ashes of a dead infant during a break-in, an inquest has heard.

Tragic Finding

Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his body in his room at his Flintshire residence on 19 November 2021.

False Accusations Start

The investigation learned how his parent got a message on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her offspring. The communication added: "Tell him thanks for burgling my flat."

In a testimony presented to the proceedings, the mother said the woman had been in the news, asserting her infant's ashes had been stolen in a break-in - a claim which was false.

Police Inquiry

An investigation report from authorities later determined the supposed break-in victim had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the property was not taken in the first place".

News coverage about the supposed stolen ashes attracted social media comments, and although the teenager was not named in the messages, his parent said people "understood it was him".

The "online posts were really distressing", she stated.

Emotional Wellbeing Impact

She added that her son had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' opinions genuinely were important to him.

"This must have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was not true".

Kai was arrested at home, but no evidence was found. He was transported to a police station and later freed under investigation.

Authorities said they would be in touch, the inquest heard, but had not contacted the relatives by the time of his death.

Isolation and Worry

His mother said her son "became isolated" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".

When she spoke to him about the supposed burglary, she said her son informed her he had entered the house because the resident who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet whenever he wanted, but refuted removing anything.

Digital Bullying

In a combined testimony between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being harassed online after the accusations.

The inquest heard that a young adult urged Kai to end his life.

She had no worries on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and joking".

She portrayed him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "family is totally shattered".

He had been "clearly hiding his worries", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".

Educational Response

The hearing received testimony from school personnel at the local secondary school.

On 8 November, she "overheard some students talking that the student had been detained and that was the initial I heard".

"He told me... he'd was innocent," she added.

After the conversation, the staff member said she rang the family's family landline and left a message saying she had communicated to the student about the allegations.

The court heard his family said they did not receive that message.

Official Conclusion

Senior investigator told the inquest he would await reports regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.

Delivering a descriptive finding, he stated: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old child.

"Likely falsehoods were afterwards embellished and exaggerated through the medium of online networks.

"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and following his interview he was freed whilst inquiries continued."

The coroner determined: "There is no evidence that the acts or omissions of any agency caused or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a personal act it is not possible to discern his purpose."
